Want Healthy Skin? Manage Stress and Stop Smoking

Everyone wants to have beautiful skin and nearly every product in the market carry that promise in neon lights. But apart from having a skin care routine, how can one achieve a healthy glow?  The Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research (MFMER) shares the following tips.

Use Sunblock

Sun exposure causes wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems while increasing the risk of skin cancer. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. If you are swimming or in doing a sports activity apply sunscreen every two hours.

No Smoking

Smoking causes wrinkles and depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that keeps it healthy. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin, fibers that help strengthen the skin.

Be Gentle to your Skin

Taking a long bath or soaking in the tub for hours removes natural oils. Choose a mild soap and use lotion or gel if you have to shave. After bathing, pat your skin dry to retain the moisture.

Eat healthy

Maintain a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein.

Manage Stress

Stress can trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. Healthy skin is a result of a healthy state of mind. Engage in activities that can manage stress. Set reasonable limits when it comes to your workload. Balance your to-do list with activities that promote relaxation.
